On this morning, students, parents, and teachers come to school together. The school is full of happy faces and bright colors. Many children bring flowers for their teachers. This is an old tradition. It is a way to say thank you and to show respect.

On Knowledge Day, there is a small ceremony. The school principal gives a short speech. He or she welcomes everyone and talks about the new year. Older students help the younger children walk into the school. This is a nice way to show that everyone is part of the school family. The first day is not for lessons. Students meet their class teacher and talk about the new year. It is a time for new beginnings.

In Southern Europe, like Italy and Spain, school starts a bit later. The weather is hot, so the summer holiday is longer. The return to school is calm and slow. Students come back step by step.

Even with these differences, there is one big idea. The start of the school year is a new beginning. Students make new goals. Teachers plan new lessons. Families change their routines. Life becomes busy again after summer.
