A2: The Lantern Bridge and the Wind Fox

The Story

Early in the evening, a young traveler arrived at a quiet hill village. The traveler was not from this place. They came because they heard about the village lantern festival. In many countries, people have festivals with lights. They hang lanterns near houses, they play music, and families walk together after sunset.

The sky was gray-blue, and the air felt cool. Small paper lanterns hung on doors and near windows. Their warm yellow light looked like little stars. At the edge of the village, a river flowed under an old stone bridge. Usually, the bridge had lanterns too, so people could cross safely. But that evening, one lantern on the bridge was broken and dark.

The traveler stopped and listened. They could hear the river moving under the bridge. They also heard a soft rustle near the stones. At first, the traveler thought it was only the wind or a bird. Then they saw something small and bright.

It was a little silver fox. Its fur looked pale in the lantern light. Its tail moved gently from side to side, like a ribbon. The fox stood beside the broken lantern and looked up at the traveler. It did not run away. It stayed there, as if it wanted to show something.

The traveler walked closer and spoke softly. “Hello, little fox,” they said. The fox blinked and lifted its nose toward the dark lantern. The traveler felt surprised, but also calm. In this village, people told stories about a “wind fox. ” Some villagers said it appeared when someone needed help on a windy night.

The traveler knelt next to the lantern. They saw that the glass was not the main problem. The lantern was dark because three small “lantern stones” were missing. In this village, people used special stones that could hold light. When they were inside the lantern, the lantern stayed bright for hours. Without the stones, the lantern could not shine.

The fox made a small sound and breathed out gently. The traveler felt a light touch of wind. For a moment, a faint glow appeared on the ground, like a tiny map. It showed three places: a forest path, a stream, and a grassy spot near the water. The traveler understood. The stones were nearby, but hidden.

So the traveler and the little fox began to search.

First, they walked along a forest path behind the bridge. The path was narrow, and leaves covered the ground. The traveler stepped carefully. The fox moved quickly but stayed close. After a short time, the fox stopped near a red mushroom. The traveler looked under it and found the first stone. It was smooth and a little warm, even in the cool air.

“Good,” the traveler said quietly. “One stone. ”

Next, they followed the sound of water to a small stream. The stream was not wide, but it moved fast over rocks. The fox jumped across easily. The traveler crossed on a flat stone and kept their balance. On the other side, the fox scratched the ground near a smooth rock. The traveler lifted the rock and found the second lantern stone.

“Two stones,” the traveler said, feeling hopeful now.

They went on for a few more minutes. The last stone was close to the river, in a small nest of grass. The grass moved in the wind. The fox pawed the grass gently, and the stone sparkled in the last light of the day. The traveler picked it up and held all three stones together in one hand.

Now they needed to go back to the bridge before it got too dark.

On the way back, they heard voices. Two children stood near the trees, looking worried. The boy held his sister’s hand, and both of them looked scared. They had come to see the festival lights, but they had walked too far and could not find the village again.

“We cannot find the village,” the boy said. “We only wanted to see the lanterns. ”

The traveler took a slow breath and spoke kindly. “It’s okay,” they said. “We can walk together. ” The traveler looked at the fox, and the fox lifted its tail. The wind seemed to move in the right direction, down toward the river path.

They walked as a group: the traveler, the two children, and the silver fox in front. They passed the dark bridge and a small hill with flowers. Step by step, the trees became fewer, and the warm lights of the village appeared again. The children smiled. They waved at the houses and started to laugh with relief.

When they reached the bridge, the traveler went straight to the broken lantern. They placed the three stones back inside the lanterns on the bridge. The fox stood very still. Then, with three small puffs of wind, it touched each lantern. One by one, the lanterns woke up. Soft yellow light spread across the stone bridge. The river below looked bright, like moving silver.

Soon, people began to arrive for the festival. Drums started to play in the village square. Families walked together, and some people carried food and tea. Then sky lanterns rose into the evening air. They floated up slowly, like warm little moons.

The traveler watched, feeling proud and thankful. The children were safe. The bridge was bright again. And the village festival could continue without fear.

This story matters because small help can bring big light. When one lantern is dark, a bridge feels unsafe. But one kind person, one helpful animal, and one good choice can change the whole night.
