B2: One Student

The Story

The project began with a clear situation. Many English learners wanted natural content, not only textbook dialogues. They wanted to hear real speech, read a clear transcript, and check meaning without opening five other apps. Ovi focused on learners from A1 to B2, especially Japanese and Spanish speakers. The team wanted each lesson to feel simple at first, but rich enough for deeper study.

So Ovi built each lesson around three connected tools. First came the popup dictionary. A learner could tap a word and see its meaning inside the sentence. Second came audio mapping. The transcript moved with the voice, word by word, so learners could follow the speaker in real time. Third came a block system. It organized the lesson into clear parts such as vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and practice.

That structure solved a very common learner problem. Imagine Yuki, a Japanese office worker, studying on the train home. She listens to a lesson and meets an unfamiliar word. In many apps, she must stop, search, and lose the flow. In Ovi’s design, help is already inside the lesson. The audio, text, and explanation stay together. That means less friction, fewer interruptions, and a better chance of finishing the lesson.

The free plan was designed to feel useful, not frustrating. Learners could open full lessons, play the audio, and read the transcript with live highlighting. They could use the popup dictionary whenever they needed support. They could also create flashcards with spaced repetition, answer comprehension questions, and switch between Study, Listen, and Read modes. This was important. Ovi did not want new users to feel trapped behind a paywall after only a short preview.

The premium plan focused on control, not just access. Ovi’s key idea was that the same lesson topic could appear in different forms. A learner might start with a news story, then change that topic into a grammar focus, a conversation, a review, an interview, or a deeper explainer. Ovi called these formats lesson recipes. There were nine in total. The meaning stayed stable, but the learning path changed to match the student’s goal.

This mattered because students do not always need the same kind of help. A Spanish-speaking learner might understand the main story but need more support with verb forms. Another learner may know the grammar, but struggle to catch fast speech. With Ovi’s system, the topic does not disappear while the method changes. That saves time. It also reduces the tired feeling of starting over with a completely different lesson just to practice one weak area.

The team also used the same source material to create extra practice. From one transcript, vocabulary list, and audio file, the system could build several new activities. It could make a Context Guesser task, a Spelling Challenge, pronunciation feedback, or writing prompts. This was a practical choice, not a flashy one. A small team cannot write every exercise by hand forever. Reusing the lesson core helped Ovi produce more learning value without losing consistency.

Speed was another serious issue. Many education projects begin with energy, then slow down because production takes too long. Ovi built its site with Astro for fast pages and Preact islands for interactive features. That technical choice helped the site load quickly and stay responsive. It also supported a fast workflow. One person could move from topic selection to script writing, audio generation, checking, and publishing in under thirty minutes.

Distribution was part of the plan from the beginning. Ovi did not want learners to discover the content only on one website. Episodes were prepared for Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube at the same time. That created a simple learner journey. A person might hear an episode during a commute, then visit the study site later to read the transcript and do the exercises. If that learner wanted more control, the premium option was ready.

Behind the learning design was a business decision too. Ovi planned three revenue streams. The first was individual subscriptions for learners who wanted customized lesson formats. The second was classroom licenses for schools and teachers. The third was API access for other education companies. All three came from the same core product. One lesson system could support one student at home, a classroom of twenty learners, or a partner company building its own tool.

In the end, Ovi’s idea was simple but powerful. One lesson should not do only one job. It should help learners listen, read, review, and practice without confusion. For busy learners, that means fewer broken study sessions. For a small team, it means faster production and lower costs. And for the platform itself, it creates a clear identity in a crowded market. Ovi was not just making English content. It was building a flexible way to learn from the same piece of English.
