Text to type: We can use three questions: What is the source, what changed, and what was the result? The source may be a company or a research team. The change may be a stronger model, different safety rules, or a new research tool. The result affects how people can use or study the system. In July 2026, Anthropic published research about J-space inside Claude models. Around 1 September, it introduced Mythos 5.1 for trusted specialist work. Around 3 September, OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra to a limited set of customers. These developments are connected, but they are not the same kind of thing. Two are model releases. J-space is a research finding, not a product.

Check: Part 1: A simple lens for understanding the changes
1. How is J-space different from Mythos 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra?
Sample answer
J-space is a research finding about activity inside a model, while Mythos 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra are models released for controlled use.

Part 2: Mythos 5.1 uses trusted access

Text to type: Anthropic introduced two versions of the same underlying model: Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1. They have the same learned core, but different safeguards. Fable 5.1 became generally available for coding, knowledge work, and long problem-solving. It can help find weaknesses in software code, but it blocks help with developing ways to attack those weaknesses. Mythos 5.1 has more permissive safeguards for approved cyber and life-science research. For this reason, it is invite-only. Vetted people and groups can receive access through the Cyber Verification Program or the Life Sciences Verification Program. Mythos 5.1 also powers Claude Security, a tool that scans collections of code, finds possible security problems, and suggests repairs for a person to review. Here, stronger access depends on trust and purpose.

Check: Part 2: Mythos 5.1 uses trusted access
1. Why does Anthropic limit access to Mythos 5.1?
Sample answer
Anthropic limits access because Mythos 5.1 can support higher-risk cyber and life-science work, so only vetted users and groups receive its more permissive safeguards.

Text to type: OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra to a limited group around 3 September 2026. The model can control computer systems and complete tasks for users, such as filling spreadsheets or building websites. OpenAI described it as a strong step for computer use, coding, science, and professional work. Its cyber ability also created serious risk. Under OpenAI’s Preparedness Framework, GPT-6 Astra was the first OpenAI model to reach the Critical cybersecurity capability level. With suitable tools and access, it can find previously unknown security weaknesses and develop ways to use them against many well-protected systems without a person directing every step. OpenAI therefore added stronger safeguards and monitoring. Access began with cyber defenders in the Daybreak program, while wider ChatGPT and API access was planned for the following days.

1. What changed because GPT-6 Astra reached the Critical cybersecurity level?
Sample answer
OpenAI used stronger safeguards, monitoring, and staged access, beginning with cyber defenders in the Daybreak program.

Part 4: J-space gives researchers a view inside
Typing practice
Type the text exactly. Timer starts with your first key.
Text to type: J-space is not another chatbot. It is a small set of internal neural patterns that researchers found inside language models such as Claude. They used the J-lens, short for Jacobian lens, to find these patterns. Each pattern connects to a word that is on the model’s “mind,” even when the model does not write that word. Researchers call this a global workspace because important concepts appear in a shared internal channel. It works silently and is different from a written chain of thought, which is an explanation shown in words. By studying J-space, researchers can sometimes see hidden concepts. This may help them notice when a model is going off track or possibly cheating on a safety test. The J-lens does not open every thought, but it offers a new way to inspect some internal activity.

Check: Part 4: J-space gives researchers a view inside
1. What can the J-lens help researchers find?
Sample answer
The J-lens can help researchers find J-space patterns linked to silent concepts that a model may not write in its answer.

Typing practice

Text to type: These examples show that “better” can mean several things. A model may become more capable, but people also need ways to manage its risks. Anthropic used different safeguards and trusted-access programs for Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1. OpenAI used its Preparedness Framework, monitoring, and staged access for GPT-6 Astra. These systems control what a model may do and who can use its strongest abilities. J-space supports a different goal: understanding internal activity. It may help researchers see silent concepts and detect troubling behavior during a test. So we can reuse our lens. The source is a company or research team. The change is a model, safeguard, access program, or inspection tool. The result may be stronger performance, safer access, or a clearer view of what is happening inside.

1. How do trusted access and J-space support AI safety in different ways?
Sample answer
Trusted access limits who can use powerful abilities, while J-space helps researchers inspect some silent concepts inside a model.
